February 3, 2017The Trip to Birmingham TradFest, one of the UK’s biggest Irish Traditional Music Festivals, takes place this weekend in and around Digbeth, the Irish Quarter of Birmingham. Over the weekend there are a variety of acts playing in gigs, concerts, jam sessions and workshops in a diverse and colourful celebration of Irish culture and heritage.
The Night Owl will be hosting the festival’s annual Molloy Award. This award is aimed at traditional Irish musicians in the UK and Ireland, aged 25 and under. In memory of Anne and Pat Molloy, who were a staple in Irish Music Pedagogy in Birmingham, the award strives to seek out new musical talent and award excellence and innovation within the idiom of Irish Traditional Music and Song and showcase it in Birmingham, a city steeped in Irish Culture. The five finalists are The Cavan Bucks, The Rising, Ignition, Out The Gap & Rowan Piggott. The winner will be crowned Molloy Award Champion 2016, play a slot at the late night festival club that evening and win a full support slot at Birmingham TradFest 2017.
The concert is free entry and guaranteed is a showcase of some of the finest young traditional musicians from anywhere in the UK or Ireland. Doors at 1.30pm.
